Growing Gardens is a human services and youth development organization based in Boulder, Colorado.  Growing Gardens’ mission is to enrich the lives of Boulder County residents through environmentally sustainable gardening programs that empower people to experience a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. 

Growing Gardens currently manages eight community gardens located throughout Boulder County. Our goal is to bring people together and provide the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables on individual plots.  Community gardens create healthy and strong communities, enhance neighborhoods and bring families closer to nature.  They can help gardeners to lower their grocery store bills and increase their vegetable consumption, often learning about new foods along the way.  Gardening increases physical activity and teaches valuable life skills such as discipline, patience, leadership and responsibility.

Community Garden Intern Opportunities

This internship will provide administration and hands-on experience with the community gardening program.  This position requires good computer, organizational and people skills and ideal candidates must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Administration

  • Assist with setting up an on-line registration system
  • Help to register over 400 gardeners
  • Update website with current information for upcoming season
  • Organize and communicate with wait list registrants
  • Reminder phone calls to renewing gardeners
  • Contribute toward monthly newsletters
Consulting Experience
  • Create a package of information on how to start a community garden
  • Attend meetings with interested groups who would like to start a garden

Special Events

  • Help present spring orientations to over 400 gardeners
  • Organize annual spring seed swap
  • Coordinate spring compost sales
  • Help organize other special events and classes for gardeners

Garden Responsibilities

  • Stock each garden in the spring with working wheelbarrows and tools
  • Communicate with gardeners about issues that arise, which may involve conflict resolution
  • Assist with weedy warnings and garden inspections
  • Help lead garden work days with special groups
  • Clean up abandoned plots
  • Attend garden leader meetings
  • Diagnose reported drip irrigation issues
  • Identify and communicate community service projects
  • Assist with the construction of new future community gardens

Structure of Internship

  • Internship duration is six months December – May (January 4th start date is negotiable)
  • Intern position is 20 hours per week.
  • Intern will be working closely with the Community Garden Director.
  • Orientation meeting with all GG interns, Director and additional GG staff.
  • Interns will report at Staff Meetings once per month - five total.
  • Interns will have the opportunity to shadow all GG staff

  • Learning Objecties Contract - Developed by second week of internship. This includes: position description, educational objectives, learning activities and skill development

  • Evaluation- A midpoint evaluation and end of internship evaluation will include intern self evaluation and supervisor evaluation

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with all types of people and who has solid organization skills.  The intern should be able to conduct themselves in a mature, responsible, professional manner when representing Growing Gardens in the community.  You will need your own vehicle for this position as it involves frequent trips to the gardens.  This is a fun, but sometimes demanding position that is very rewarding and works with good people who enjoy gardening.
