Growing Gardens is a human services and youth development organization based in Boulder, Colorado.  Growing Gardens’ mission is to enrich the lives of Boulder County residents through environmentally sustainable gardening programs that empower people to experience a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. 

The Greenhouse at Growing Gardens is a unique and wonderful facility; it is located on the last piece of agricultural land in Boulder, Colorado.  The Greenhouse Program reaches a wide variety of populations through Growing Gardens programs. The Spring Plant Sale supports these programs.  Please visit our website www.growinggardens.org to learn more about our work.  The Spring Plant Sale Internship will focus on all phases of plant propagation, retail sales, and developing a new face of an established and successful sale.  The Spring session of Greenhouse Growing is dynamic; fast paced and requires a great deal of focus and dedication. The magic of growing food for community is a powerful experience, come and be a part of growing a great new foundation for the Plant Sale. 

Plant Sale Greenhouse Grower Duties

  • Assisting the Grower in all phases of plant growth:
    • seeding, transplanting, fertilizing, watering, pest monitoring
  • Assist with developing a new location and format for the GG Plant Sale
    • Creating a retail area  and sales in the greenhouse
    • Overseeing 4 Saturday Sales at the greenhouse location with staff support
    • Keeping good inventory records
    • Learning to use a label making printer to tag the plants
    • Being involved in the marketing and promotion of the “new” plant sale
    • Working with a dynamic volunteer work force
  • Assist, teach and oversee  volunteers and groups of volunteers with Plant Sale related tasks
  • Participate in the systems that keep the Plant Sale on schedule and target
  • Helping to care for the greenhouse one weekend a month
  • Help to lead tours of the Growing Gardens Site to groups and individual volunteers
  • Helping out with Plant Sale marketing, creating signs, putting signs out and in
Knowledge and Skills the Intern May Acquire
  • Gain an understanding of the Growing Gardens programs, their needs and in the Greenhouse.
  • Gain skills and understanding of organic food starts, heirloom tomatoes, and veggies
  • Gain skills in growing for a retail plant sale 
  • The ability to work in a team environment
  • The ability to work in a dynamic environment: this includes being comfortable changing tasks, working/leading diverse groups, feeling confident with a diverse population
  • Organic greenhouse practices, production methods and marketing
  • Create positive atmosphere for the interaction of  diverse populations
  • Observation Skills
  • Ability to organize work and volunteer groups
  • Develop an ability to anticipate work, and volunteer needs and gain the confidence needed to jump in and lead
  • Gain confidence by helping volunteers to participate in the growing skills that the internship is providing you with

Structure of Internship

  • Internship will take place February 15 through May 31 2011
  • Financial compensation is available
  • Intern position is 30 hours per week
  • Intern will be working closely with a Mentor from Growing Gardens staff who will oversee all daily activities
  • Orientation meeting with all GG interns, mentor, intern supervisor and additional GG staff
  • Interns will meet with GG supervisor every other week for the duration of the contract
  • Interns will report at Staff Meetings once per month -3 total
  • Interns will have the opportunity to shadow all GG staff

  • Learning Objectives Contract- Developed by second week of internship- will include: position description, educational objectives, learning activities and skill development

  • Evaluation- A midpoint evaluation and end of internship evaluation will include intern self evaluation, supervisor and mentor evaluation

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about learning how to grow grow a successful fund raising event.  The programs and greenhouse operation of Growing Gardens depend on the revenue generated from the Plant Sale. The Plant Sale Grower must be responsible, dedicated and organized. Growing experience is required; experience in retail sales or an interest in retail is a plus.  This experience is a great opportunity for someone interested in a job in the growing, gardening, and/or event organizing.
