Boulder Community Food Project

Working with local community partners to create the Boulder Community Food Project, Growing Gardens teaches families in need of food to grow organic produce and prepare healthy meals with it. This reduces the burden on community agencies and creates a sense of self-sufficiency among these families. We also provide space for individuals and families to grow organic produce near their homes. We develop relationships with low-income neighborhoods to design and install new organic garden sites. Educational programs are offered to all participants in the Boulder Community Food Project to increase an individualís knowledge and skills in organic gardening techniques and preparation of whole foods.

Gardens have been developed at the Woodlands Neighborhood, Casa de la Esperanza, San Juan del Centro, and the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. During the past 5 years BCFP has provided gardens for 54 families and over 353 individuals. The ¡Cultiva! Youth Project grows vegetable starts and donates seeds for the Boulder Community Food Project gardens. The capacity exists in many public housing sites to secure gardening space, however many of these potential sites are undeveloped due to lack of resources, education, and coordination. Growing Gardens is dedicated to providing these resources. Collaborators in this project include Community Food Share, Colorado State University, USDA, Boulder Housing Authority and the Emergency Family Assistance Association. These partnerships, along with community outreach efforts for the project, create a stronger local food system.
