COMPOSTABLE MATERIALS
Compost collection bins are located at each of the community gardens.
Western Disposal picks-up the compost bins weekly from the community gardens.
They return the finished material in the spring and fall for the compost
sales.
Foothills Community Garden also collects compostable materials in the
resource area which is then processed on plot #45.
You are encouraged to also compost your compostables on site at your garden
plot.

GARDEN BUDDIES
CALL IF YOU NEED HELP WITH
YOUR GARDEN. That is what the Garden Buddy program is about. Having
an ailing parent in another state, injuring your back, breaking an ankle,
having a seriously injured child . . . none of us wants to experience
difficulties but they are part of life and do happen. When a difficult
time arises I understand that your garden plot is not the first thing
on your mind, but we can't help if we don't have your permission to
do so! Please call or contact your Garden Leader. It is the community
part of community gardening.
GARDEN LEADERS
The role of the Garden Leaders is to provide
support for the other gardeners in their section. They will try to provide
information or coordinate help for you if you need it. They serve as
a liaison between gardeners and the coordinator. Some Garden Leaders
may head up an event or be a workday coordinator. They are responsible
for letting others in their section know of anything important coming
up. They will be able to contact you by phone, e-mail, or a message
in a bottle on your garden plot. Their plots will be marked so you know
where they are in your section. The garden leaders will be responsible
for enforcing the rules and policies of the gardens. This includes weedy
warnings. If a concern arises, contact your garden leader or the coordinator.
Online
Donations
We are now able to accept online donations, with 100% of your donation
going toward Growing Gardens' programs. Many thanks to our supporters!

PLOT NUMBERS
After we have received your application and fee, you will be notified
by phone or e-mail when a plot becomes available and what number plot
has been assigned to you.
RENEWALS
2009 renewal notices will go out the end of January. If
you maintain your garden and clean it up at the end of the season, you
will automatically be sent a renewal notice. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP YOUR ADDRESS CURRENT WITH THE OFFICE.
When you receive information from the Community Garden Program PLEASE RESPOND IMMEDIATELY. After
the deadlines have past, and you have not sent in your renewal or received
confirmation that you have your plot for next season, your garden plot
becomes available for open registration.
RULES
have their
own web page.
STRAW AND OTHER MULCH
MATERIALS
For the past few years we have
been fortunate to either have someone donate straw or sell it to us
at a reduced rate. Hopefully we will be lucky this year too! However,
mulch material is not something that is officially provided. Straw can
be purchased at area farms and feed stores.
THEFT AND PREVENTION
Overall, theft is not a big problem at the community gardens. We
may loose a couple tomatoes or squash to some hungry visitors be they
human or four footed. This occurred because historically, the community
gardens on the whole were not as well maintained and looked less cared
for. Not many gardeners were out and about. Things have changed. The
gardens are well cared for and gardeners are around. Basically these
harvesters just need to get the message that the community gardens are
no longer a good place to steal. The police will increase their patrols
of the community garden area, especially in August and September. The
city will prosecute those who steal produce from the gardens.
TOOL SHED AND COMMUNITY TOOLS
The Hawthorn Gardens has tools available in the small red shed on
the north side of the gardens. There will be a small amount of tools
available for the gardeners that will be shared with the ¡Cultiva!
Youth Project. They will be locked up at night. If you would like to
donate your tools please feel free. If you would like to store your
tools there please be aware they will be used by others and there is
a chance of theft. Community tools will have brightly painted handles
to identify them. Foothills, Fortune, Hickory, Holiday and Centennial
Community Gardens have tools in storage sheds at the gardens. The combinations
for the locks will be given at orientation.

is for unloading purposes only. They must be removed when unloading
has been completed. Cars are prohibited in the gardens after June 18th.
Under no circumstances may vehicles be driven along internal garden
paths. Please use caution when driving around the community gardens.
It is a high pedestrian and bike traffic area.
Community
Gardeners Community Service Requirements
Four hours of Community Service time (per plot per year) must be given
to participate in the Community Garden Program. This is in addition
to maintenance of your plot and pathways. This will be tracked closely.
Failure to do these hours will result in non-renewal of the garden plot
or a fine of $80 to renew the plot the following year. There are many tasks needing to be completed
and the office is open to unique and creative suggestions. There are
specific garden work days that will be scheduled throughout the season. Other events and/or activities please coordinate with Garden
Coordinator or assistant. with the following information: Gardner name and plot number, task completed, date completed, numer of hours completed. The deadline to complete and report Community Service hours to the office is November 15, 2008.
WATER will be turned on
as soon as possible, weather permitting. If the weather is mild, in
Feburary; otherwise, in March.
WEEDS
There are many weeds in the community gardens. Please try to keep your
paths around your plot weed free and the weeds in your garden well under
control. Weeds compete with other plants in your garden and can become
invasive. Weeds that go to seed affects your neighbors gardens as well.
For this and other reasons we have the weedy warning rule and the May
1st deadline for plot maintenance.
