After School Garden Club -- Spring
Tuesdays in May:
May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24
3:45pm-5:15pm
$10 per child per visit
It’s spring in the garden which means a return to digging in the dirt! During the Children’s Peace Garden After School Garden Club, we will explore the tools of our trade. What is needed to get the garden planted and producing fresh veggies for us to enjoy? We’ll transplant in the greenhouse, dig and plant in the Children’s Peace Garden, build habitats for insects and birds, visit our bees as they continue to make honey, and make tasty treats from our spring garden.
Tuesday, May 3: What's Growing On in the Peace Garden?
What's Growing On in the Peace Garden?: The first session of Garden Club will be an exploratory introduction to the garden site. We'll start in the greenhouse and investigate what's growing and help the greenhouse grower by transplanting young seedlings getting ready to go outside. Then we'll head out to the gardens and let our taste buds do the walking. We'll sample roots, shoots, and leaves on our exploratory tour of the spring gardens.
Tuesday, May 10: Busy Bees!
Busy Bees: Spring is in full swing and honeybees are busy pollinating the flowers in the garden! Let's go visit their hive to find out what they're doing! We'll dress up as beekeepers and visit our resident honeybee top bar hive. Through an observation window, we'll be able to observe bees making new honeycomb, passing pollen, and working in community. After we're back in the greenhouse, we'll taste some of the honey harvested this fall from the hive. Yummy!
Tuesday, May 17: Garden Games
Garden Games: Spend the afternoon learning through playing! Using what we learned during Busy Bees, we'll have pollination relay races. We'll have a garden scavenger hunt and play What Makes a Garden Grow? and Crow, Seed and Farmer J.
Tuesday, May 24: Planting Extravaganza!
Planting Extravaganza!: The seedlings have grown and are now ready to make their first appearance in the garden! We'll spend the afternoon creating a design for our salsa garden. Once our design is in place, we'll roll up our sleeves and get to work. While planting, we'll learn what the garden will need in the coming months to ensure juicy ripe fruits to enhance our salsa making skills! At the end of the afternoon, each child will get to choose a plant to take home and nurture.
